Darryl

April 10, 2010 Leave a comment

I’ve let my vitriol towards Darryl out in little bits and spurts this season, mostly after the deadline, but I think it’s time to get comprehensive on this bitch.

I think there are 4 main problems with Darryl as GM, here’s an overview.  I’ll go a lot more indepth after the current awards series is over.

1. Micromanaging

If you watch the decisions made by coaches these past few years (benching Juice, putting Tanguay in a checking role, starting Toskala at absurd times) it’s clear that he likes to put his hands where they don’t belong. For a man who’s supposed to manage the hockey operations as a whole, he spends far too much time making decisions that the coaches, who see these players every day, are aware are completely moronic. Especially when he seems to largely ignore player development as a result.

2. Inability to Understand the Salary Cap

Just look at the team next year: aging D who are overpaid (Staios and Sarich), long term high-ish paying contract to Stajan (a marginal second liner) when both Backlund and Langkow are here and neither are 1st line  centers either, and constantly signing players who’ve just passed their prime at their prime value instead of players yet to come into it at a cheaper cost (Bourque being the exception).

3. Too Much Leeway

Dear Ken King,

When you give someone an “infinite contract”, you are basically saying “Go wild!” and handing them a bottle of tequila. And while Darryl seems like more of a port guy, he’s clearly gone wild

4. “Win Now At All Costs” Attitude

This basically ropes everything together. He thinks he knows what’s best on the ice, so instead of letting the coach fully implement a system, he hamstrings him by forcing decisions upon him. He trades futures for players that are just barely producing this season and will only cripple us capwise the next. He has no regard for tomorrow, and barely understands today.

Furthermore, Darryl Sutter has alienated a vast majority of the media, refuses to admit mistakes to the point of lying, and treats players horribly (remember the Andrew Ference fiasco?). He rarely makes an outside hire, choosing instead to hire his siblings as scouts, coaches, and most likely caterers. People who fail (Playfair) are inevitably given a lower job rather than that job being given to someone who deserves it. I understand loyalty, but it rarely applies to Sutter’s players (hypocrisy) and in this case prevents new blood from entering the organization.

Sutter has run things into the ground. Time for a change, I think.

Vancouver Still Sucks!

I really want to bring to light the excellent work our friend (ed: Justin is using the word “our” in the sense the Queen of Canada- you guys have a Queen, right?- uses the word “our”. It’s the royal “our”)(ed 2: Yep, still the actual leader of the country, although it’s more symbolic than anything. DomeBeers.com did a couple of days ago. It seems a fan from Vancouver, the douchebag-hipster capital of Canada, thinks that the Flames and their fans suck. Well, I would like to take another opportunity to spew hate at those assholes, and add a couple of points on to DB’s argument:

1. You have two of the most universally hated players in the game.

No one commands as much respect as Ryan Kesler (ed: screw you he’s an upstanding American hero among the likes of George Washington, Ulysses Grant, and Will Smith in Wild Wild West)(ed 2: I like most Americans. He’s still an asshole.)  and Alex Burrows do. Real class act, stand-up guys. They only play dirty, whine more than my 4-year-old sister, and fake injury on a regular basis (ed: quick correction, in 5 NHL seasons Kesler has only missed 2 games)(ed 2: he still fakes injury a ton.)

Check out this video:

The thing that pisses me off the most about them? They refuse to be accountable for their actions. They run and hide behind pylons like Rick Rypien and Darcy Hordichuk (ed: SCREW THOSE GUYS AMIRIGHT ) (ed 2: YA UR RIGHT) who collectively have less brain cells then the average embryo.

A Brief Look at NTC’s/NMC’s

A lot of talk around the Saddlesphere the past couple days has revolved around Jarome Iginla. Trades, captaincy, all of that good stuff. (In the interest of disclosure, Iggy has always been my favorite player and I will defend him to the death.) This then brought on a FanPost on Matchsticks and Gasoline from LawrenceS on trading Iggy. While it’s fun to debate about this stuff, the reality is that he has a large contract, which limits the amount of teams he can play for, and a NMC, which pretty much ensures he isn’t going anywhere. Rarely do players actually waive a NMC/NTC, especially when said player does not want to leave. With that, let’s look the Flames’ players with NTC’s and NMC’s:

A Depressing Outlook and Mailbag

March 23, 2010 1 comment

The Calgary Flames’ season has the potential to end tonight. Maybe not officially, but as I write this, they sit 4 points back of the Detroit Red Wings for 8th, 6 behind the Avs for 7th, and 4 up on the Blues for 9th. Those are all large gaps, given that they make up 25% of the Flames’ available points at the moment. The Flames need to keep the Wings (or Avs, depending on the next couple games) within one game, even if Detroit has an extra to play with points wise.  Lose tonight, and there is a good chance Detroit goes 5 or 6 points up with 9 games left. That is a near-impossible gap to make up, especially considering the injuries that the Flames have encountered over the past 3 games.

Awesome job, Brent!

(So that mailbag? Yeah, it’s being delayed while I pawn my rage off on my computer. You can still send questions to justin.azevedo20(at)gmail.com.)

Usually when teams are in a playoff race, they are supposed to show some kind of desperation. Desperation is not spelled “Vesa Toskala”. I understand why you started him, Brent-you think that there is no way in hell you are missing the playoffs, so you want to rest Kipper for the run. And while it’s fine to think like that, you also have to realize that you are in 9th place and you have to do everything you can to get this weak-sauce team into the post season. It’s not all your fault. I understand that Darryl made awful trades in order to get you the roster you have now, but this is still a playoff roster. The sum of these parts (no matter how small those parts may be) makes up a playoff team.

But you have made mistake after mistake after mistake. Multiple times, in multiple situations, you put the 4th line on after an icing call when the other team’s tired 4th line is out there. You played Olli Jokinen and Iggy together for 50 games, and you used them against the toughest competition. Then you wondered why they weren’t playing up to their salary. I’ll tell you why-because Olli Jokinen’s only offensive move was the “rape face”; and Iggy has carried this team for 10 years, so the days of him being able to do it by himself are over.

Brent, I know you will never read this, but if it somehow makes your way to you, heed this advice: stop being such a moron and use your assistant coaches. I know 2 of them and have met a 3rd multiple times, and they are all very smart and have immense hockey knowledge. In addition, forget how much you are paying each of these guys and put them in a position to succeed, not to fail. I, and many other Flames fans for that matter, would rather see Steve Staios and Cory Sarich go up against the opposing team’s fourth lines then to have them in positions where their salary makes sense. Ditto for Kotalik, and sadly, Hagman.

(I never thought I would say this, but I would rather be paying Jamal Mayers that 3 million dollar salary that Ales Kotalik right now. Jamal is producing, both with his fists and his stick. Kotalik sucks on toast.)

Well, try to suck less and good luck down the way.

(Edited @ 545 for Grammar.)

Thanks a lot, Vancouver.

I didn’t think I could hate you guys any more then I already did. Even when I’m cheering for you (well, ok, not cheering , but hoping for a Detroit loss), you guys go out there and shit the bed with that. 2 goals in 5 seconds? That’s Edmonton bad. At least Edmonton can use the “we really suck” excuse for allowing a goal with .2 seconds left, but you guys have nothing to fall back on. Couldn’t Burrows have pulled off some random piece of douchebaggery to stop Zetterberg? Couldn’t that dickhead Kesler have hit the net with 30 seconds left? Howard had left more net open there then Curtis McElhenney does on a per-game basis! Luongo wasn’t even flopping when they scored! I know, it surprised me too!

Well, look at it this way: by the transitive property, you guys are now worse then Edmonton.

Go Screw Yourselves,

Justin

Edit: Special mention to Iggy for beating the shit out of that asshole Ryane Clowe, and to apologize for the excessive swearing.

On Headshots and Cheap Play

March 17, 2010 4 comments

The most important issue in the NHL right now is the lack of respect amongst players that leads to unnecessarily dangerous and reckless play. This is a regarded by many as a two-faced issue: on one hand, the safety of the players continues to be in jeopardy because of the league’s seeming inability to do anything to try and stem the flow of such play, and on the other hand, you have the purists and hardcore fans who don’t want the physical aspect of the game lessened. But there is a third side, as well: the overwhelming public perception. Read more…
